It also has AAA graphics and co-op or single-user game play for the price of an indie puzzle game -- on sale. Lots of replayability on the few maps it comes with, and (though somewhat controversial) the new maps and weapons released as DLC are a lot of fresh fun that I feel are worth the cost. The DLC weapons can be used by you in games that your friends may not have them, which helps keep your load outs unique to eachother, and they're cheap if you ever want to add on. Those complaining of this model are forgetting how much replayable game you are already getting for the base price of 9.99. The extra stuff is just sprinkles and doughnuts. Play it with your friends or alone, it's a great mesh of tower defense and varied, upgradable gunplay. Simply stunning game.. I love this game. I have always loved this game. Something about FPS meets tower defence game that just speaks to me. Not only that - the way that it beutifully satisfies the different types of players in Co-op means (outside of Portal 2), its the game you have to have as a co-op. I would like to see some more maps, but with Sanctum 2 here - Im thinking this is not something I am ever likely to see. But, counterbalance this with what is now a very reasonable price, and you've got yourself a highly enjoyable game thats worth the spend when your looking to share your evenings with that special IP address.. Tower defense seems like the kind of open-ended genre you could mash just about anything into and get it to work, yet hybrid titles aren’t all that common. Sanctum, for example, allows you to assemble your defenses and battle the hordes yourself as a first-person shooter, but it and its sequel are practically the only instances of the concept. It’s a good one too, especially the way Sanctum gives you a wider variety of options when upgrading your defenses. And if it only had more in the way of actual content in which to exercise those options, it probably would have ended up as more of a classic than the backlog-filler it seems to be for most.Case in point: Sanctum has no story whatsoever. You’re a spandex-clad lady with awesome hair and a big robot gauntlet, and you’ve got to stop alien-things from mashing their faces into your core-thing. I don’t know how or when or why any of these things happen, and while it’s certainly not essential for a game like this it would help to have some grounding. Titles like Defense Grid actually benefit greatly from their plots, that one in particular getting a lot of mileage out of its hilarious AI companion and unique setups for levels. Sanctum has the appearance of a vibrant world with stories to tell, but disappointingly little to dig into.So instead we get to business. Each level has a core and access points for monsters to come smash it from, and in between are different paths they can take. Some levels are twisting routes while others are wide-open fields, but no matter the layout there are dozens upon dozens of spots where you can build blocks. Blocks… block enemies from passing, and though you can’t completely wall off your core you can create mazes to corral the enemy. All sorts of weapons can be built into your blocks, including gatling guns, laser turrets, mortars, drone launchers, and several status-affecting devices that pair well with certain weapons. The strategy, then, is to place weapons in the spots where they’ll do the most work in your maze layout. That’s only half the battle with Sanctum, though. You can carry three weapons into battle yourself, arms like an assault pistol, sniper rifle, and lightning gun. Each has unique primary and secondary attacks, and just like towers they can be upgraded to be more powerful. Your weapons can actually hold off entire waves themselves with the right combination of upgrades and skills, so there’s a major strategic consideration on what to upgrade with your resources. Do you rely on automated defenses, put everything on yourself, or mix the two? Enemies are varied enough that you can’t just focus on one weapon type regardless, so you’ll need to prepare for big, lumbering foes, tiny swarming ones, and flying hostiles alike. As a tower defense title, Sanctum does everything expected of the genre and little else, so it’s the first-person combat that gives it an edge. Unfortunately, that’s about the only edge it has so unless you’re desperate to jump into the fight yourself, you may be better served by other games in the genre. The base game has only seven levels to work through, each with set enemy patterns. You can challenge them on four different difficulties and in some slightly different “survival” modes, but that still might be a record low for content in a game like this. There’s not exactly a proliferation of enemies or weapons either, enough to fill out a regular game but not enough to cover for a lack of other content.Sanctum’s certainly a fun game, but unless you’re really into perfecting defenses or chasing high scores it won’t last you long. I wish there was more to do in a game that gives you an unprecedented presence in tower defense, but unless you really invest in your personal weapons it’s just a different perspective to observe the battle from. I dig the bright, detailed art style and it all sounds pretty good, but there’s no soundtrack to speak of and no plot propping any of it up. Play this one with friends if you can, because while it’s a neat twist on tower defense it’s one that runs out of steam real quick.Did you enjoy this review? I certainly hope so, and I certainly hope you'll check out more of them at https://goldplatedgames.com/ or on my curation page!. I finally finished the main game so I get to write my review! Okay, to start off, this game has... not-the-greatest reviews on Metacritic. Currently it's sitting at around 6.7 userscore, which actually isn't too bad. That puts it around the atmosphere of popular games like Destiny(6.1), World of Warcraft: Legion (7.3), and Monster Hunter: World(7.8). Point being; just don't knock it because it's not in the green on Metacritic, you'd be surprised how many of the games you love aren't. Now, personally I like to read the negative comments on games just to see what they are, especially on games I love. On Metacritic most of them seem to be outdated information like "not enough content" and "I beat it in 3 hours." I just now beat the main game (8 levels) and it took me 25 hours on normal. Another complaint was that the DLC cost too much but both DLC's will cost you only $10 (the price of the original game) and adds 8 more levels(10 with the free DLC's). So the price compared to the the content is actually very adequate. In some games you'd pay $10 just for a skin or something. Now I'll address the negative comments coming from Steam that I've seen: The number one major complaint I've seen is that the game is too hard. I'll tell you, I suck at games, I play a lot, but I'll admit I'm slightly below average I think. I was able to solo this whole game on normal by myself, and there are videos and guides showing you how to beat levels solo on the hardest difficulty. The lucky part of this game is it require little skill and more strategy like every other TD game out there. So it is possible to solo each and every single level on the hardest difficulty if you plan correctly. [Someone also said this game has a massive difficulty spike. Again, I suck at TD games but the difficulty spike doesn't seem any different than any other TD game I've played. Just about every TD game I've played goes "easy easy easy HARD".] I will say this game isn't really on the casual side of gaming. This is one of those games where you're going to hard to figure out what works on your own. They do provide a tutorial and a fairly detailed description of the weapons and towers though. Overall though you're going to have to experiment and figure out what works and how to win the game. Another aspect of this is that you decide the path the enemies are going to take, which I like. However I understand that may be another characteristic that may not be for the more casual gamers out there. So that may be a somewhat valid complaint, but it's not really a con to the game. It's just more geared to people who enjoy strategy and figuring things out on their own. One complaint I will admit is actually fairly valid is the fact that the maps take a long time. The final level took me over 2 hours to complete in the attempt where I actually beat it. I attempted it two times before and failed with each attempt taking over an hour each. I've played over 25 hours and only beat 8 levels, so do the math there. Again, not the most casual-friendly aspect of the game. Personally though I highly enjoyed it and it's even more fun with a friend. I always hated on TD games where you pretty much played a passive part after the mobs came. This alleviates some of that by allowing you to actually be involved in the action by shooting the enemies and helping your towers. Some enemies can't even be hurt by the towers unless the player weakens them first, which is pretty cool. I also used to always hate when you take damage from one enemy with 1 hp left that manages to get past your defenses. On this game you have a buffer to that in the form of player involvement. 5/5 Awesome game, loved it. Additional Comments: I noticed people compare this to Orcs Must Die and Dungeon Defenders and said they're both better: As far as OMD; I have no real compliant, it was a good game. I gave it a 4/5, but I love this game more. OMD is also more of a "Trap Defense" than an actual "Tower Defense" game like this one is. So keep that in mind. As far as DD; The issue with this game is that it's heavily reliant on an active player base which I don't feel is really there anymore. I played it and I thought it was okay but the obvious downfall is that no one really plays it anymore. Now they did come out with DD2, however no one enjoyed it and most players just went back to the original game. Sanctum has pretty much a player base of zero unless you invite your friends, however the solo play is quite enjoyable and will take you quite some time until you can play Sanctum 2.. A great TD game - better than Sanctum 2. It's cheap, runs well, looks pretty. FPS play works very well in the game to keep the action going. It's also very cool to play with other people, I've gone hours on survival mode with my friends. The game has a lot of content going for it already, but then there's also the free DLCs and the really cheap ones (they go down to $0.99 on sale).I find the game is better than Sanctum 2 - the game just feels better. It really has polish, and I felt Sanctum 2 kind of lacked that; as a result, it's a funner game. You don't have to level up for perks, (the grind is removed entirely) and there isn't pressure to be constantly firing at all times.I also see much better FPS in this game than in Sanctum 2, even when I turn down the graphics to low. The game ends up looking worse than Sanctum 1 but still doesn't run as well. There are a lot of really cool towers in this game too, and the lack of a wall limit (which was an odd decision for Sanctum 2 that further distanced it from a TD game) lets you be much more inventive with the game.Past that, Sanctum is really a good game. For fans of TD, FPS, and messing around with their friends, Sanctum is a game for you.
